The latest annual crime statistics have revealed that 57 people are killed per day in South Africa.

 

 

Police Minister Bheki Cele along South African Police Service top management have released the crime stats in Parliament on Tuesday.

The statistics cover the financial year that ended in March 2018.

SAPS head of police crime research and statistics Major General Norman Sekhukhune says while the overall broad category of contact crimes has decreased by 1.1%, murder, sexual offences and attempted murder have gone up.

Sekhukhune says the highest contributor to murder cases in the country are gang related incidents recorded at 973 murders and mob justice cases recorded at 849 cases.

He says the highest leading province with mob justice cases is Gauteng at 264 cases, followed by the Western Cape with 173 cases and KwaZulu-Natal with 145 and Limpopo 95 murders.

Sekhukhune says some of the motive for the murder cases include illicit mining, taxi violence, farm murders, political killings and police killings with many cases reported in the Western Cape and Gauteng.
